Stage 2
Next, the installation of the various components. First to go into the case were the 5 fans. The fan cables were braided and left for later.
I then began work on the motherboard stacks, as the design shows three of the motherboards hang from the roof of the case, and two stack up from the bottom. The motherboards have 120 mm PVC spacers to keep them apart and are threaded along M4 zinced thread section. The zinc thread section was cut into the correct lengths for both the top and bottom stacks of motherboards, before the 120 mm PVC sections where cut to size and laid to one side. Once all the sections were prepared the stacks were made, stacked as follows:
For the top stack:
Repeated for each motherboard as you go down. There are four rods that go through each motherboard in the corners.
Stage 3
Next on the list was to install the PSUs and the switch / LED circuits. I'm not too hot with electronics, so I managed to enlist my brother to sort the circuits out for me. Phew!
The installation of the power supplies was pretty simple. The more time consuming part of their installation was spray painting the PSUs. Firstly all the stickers had to be removed from the PSUs themselves, which required the use of countless razors and paint thinner - I had a bad headache for quite a while after that. I gave them a once over with wet and dry paper, before opening them all up and wrapping the internals in a plastic bag as you cannot remove the circuitry without cutting cables. I then masked up the back switches and plug points on each one. They were then all sprayed with two coats of smooth silver Hammerite spray paint.
The PSUs are bolted to the back of the case, but I felt they needed more support than that. Consequently, I put in an M5 zinc thread rod that runs from top to bottom. Onto the thread I put large washers clamped top and bottom with M5 nuts to support the backs of the PSUs. After much nut twiddling (oo err) I could insert the PSUs.
Rear of the PSUs behind the Hard disk drives. The washer and two M5 nuts can be seen on the M5 thread section which supports the backs of all the PSUs.
